Privacy-first analytics in one step.

Umami is open-source web analytics: page views, visitors, referrers, countries, devices and custom events, collected without cookies, so it does not need a consent banner of its own. Fortly installs Umami 3.4 into a new project and asks one question: an admin password of at least twelve characters. It creates the project’s PostgreSQL database, applies Umami’s migrations, replaces Umami’s well-known default login with your password before the app is reachable, and checks that the live app answers. An install takes under a minute.

  1. Open Apps in the console and choose Umami. Generate offers a strong password.
  2. Deploy, then sign in at the project’s address with the username admin and the password you chose.
  3. Add a website under Settings, copy its tracking code and paste it into your site’s head.

On the Workers runtime, not a server you keep awake.

Umami runs on Fortly’s Workers runtime, the same engine as a Next.js app you deploy yourself. Nothing runs between visits, a quiet dashboard costs nothing to keep, and the first request after a quiet spell starts it in about a second. Recording a visit takes a few tens of milliseconds once it is warm.

Each visit is written to the project’s own PostgreSQL database, which only this project can reach. The data is yours: back it up, export it whole, query it from the Database tab, or restore it to an earlier minute on a paid plan. Umami never stores a visitor’s IP address.

Part What Fortly provides
Runtime Umami 3.4 on the Workers runtime
Database The project’s own PostgreSQL database, with Umami’s tables created at install
Sign-in Your admin password in place of Umami’s published default
Secret A generated APP_SECRET that signs logins
Locations Country, region and city from Cloudflare, with no GeoIP file to update

Track a site in three lines of setup.

Umami’s tracking code is a single script tag. It loads script.js from your Umami project and sends each visit to its /api/send endpoint. Give the project its own domain, such as stats.example.com, on the Domains tab and use that address in the tracking code, so the script is served from a name you control.

<script defer
  src="https://stats.example.com/script.js"
  data-website-id="your-website-id"></script>

Visitor locations come from Cloudflare, which already knows each visitor’s country, region and city by the time the request reaches Umami. There is no GeoIP database to download, license or keep current.

Page views are counted automatically. To count actions too, such as a signup or a download, add a data-umami-event attribute to the button or call umami.track with an event name from your own code; events appear in the same dashboard beside the visits that led to them.

After it is live.

Invite teammates in Umami itself, and add every site you run as its own website in the same dashboard. On Fortly, the project behaves like any other: its logs are on Observability, its database on the Database tab, and its domains on Domains. A site that runs on Fortly too can keep its analytics one project away.

Before you build

A few useful answers.

Does Umami need a cookie banner?

Umami does not set cookies or store IP addresses. Your own legal obligations still depend on your site and where your visitors are.

Where do visitor locations come from?

From Cloudflare’s country, region and city for each request. There is no GeoIP database to download or update.

Can I track several sites?

Yes. Add each site as a website in the same Umami dashboard and paste its own tracking code.
